Currituck YMCA - Healthy Kids Day

So many times we try to find something to do that is 1. FREE 2. FUN and 3. HEALTHY for the kids. The Currituck Family YMCA knocked it out of the park this weekend with their Healthy Kids Day event. Our kids learned about snacks, activities and living an active life style - our family even found a new dentist! On top of that, the kids got to run an obstacle course AND man a fire hose with the NC Forest Service!

We are Y members, and have attended other events in the past - this one was out of the box fun - and we're already looking forward to their next event (Memorial Day Weekend).

Thanks Y - Staff! We had a blast.

Spring Is HERE!

How do we know its finally Spring?
The traffic that makes us crazy....

Well there are two types of traffic here in Currituck
The first type that is loud, frustrating and racing through the county along 168/158.

Then there is an all together different type of traffic that everyone - even those who don't live here - should respect ((if not greatly appreciate)).

I know it is finally spring when I hear the fields surrounding my home come to life with preparation for the season and hard work. Maybe I'm a little nostalgic, but I don't mind getting stuck behind farm equipment - at least I'm sitting in traffic because someone's working hard instead of stuck behind everyone going on vacation.

Don't get me wrong - I am aware of and appreciate the fact that our county welcomes out of town visitors each year, which affords tourist industry funds and helps support our economy...

But at the end of the day; I would much rather sit behind a big red tractor than a never ending line of out of state plates. Be kind to those working the fields and be courteous when driving. We may not be "on their vacation" but we can still make the best of it.

Here's to a safe Spring and Summer Season ~~~

Moyock Fire Dept, Easter Breakfast

Moyock Fire Dept - Easter Breakfast:
By: Denise Hall

Grigsby, had fun checking out the fire truck!
A fun time was had by all at the Moyock Volunteer Fire Department's  breakfast with the Easter Bunny!  There was much to do for the kids, with a jump house, egg hunt, and pictures with the Easter Bunny. They also got to play with a fire hose and climb through the trucks!  The breakfast was great and it was an all hands on deck morning.  Moyock Volunteer Fire Department is a great asset to our community and we need to do all we can to support them!

WE'RE BACK!

Sorry about the delay in updates, but thanks to a sprained ankle and extremely busy week for my family I was away from the computer a bit more than usual.
Calling All Events!!
We've hit a low in event submissions - we cannot keep the blog updated without community support. Have something fun going on? hosting a fundraiser? in a school play? Make sure you email us with information and either a web link or contact information to be included with your post.

Bankers' Hours - Keeping up with the community!

So, as I stated on various group pages I am not a professional blogger. I don't know the rules, haven't researched the most efficient post strategies (yet) - I am not a journalist. I have three small kids, a husband, two dogs and a bunch of dirt I hope to grow veggies in this year.

All of that being said I'd like to see Currituck Central grow and meet the needs of our community. I've been trying to figure out the best way to keep up with the "Things To Do" page of this blog - and after some careful thought (and realization that new things are being submitted all the time) I'm going to run bankers hours. Translation?

New submissions will be added as they are received in the currituckcentral@gmail.com inbox through 4pm - after 4pm they will be posted the following day. No new submissions will be added on Sat or Sun. Finally, I am in the US Army Reserve and there will be times when I'm called away on duty - I'll give fair warning when I'll be away so people can submit early.

Thank you for your continued support and submissions. Currituck Central will NOT be successful without YOUR input.

Local Advice for Beginning Gardners

Many of us enjoy being outside - especially now that beautiful weather has arrived. Today my family and I will spend the morning working in our yard and prepping our garden plot for planting.

I'm an Army girl was born and raised in Detroit (Metro), and my husband is a military brat who then signed up for service in the Navy. Why does that matter? We haven't grown up working the soil here in Currituck like so many others have. The plethora of information on the internet about soil types, quality, compost etc etc etc - can be extremely overwhelming. We were very very blessed to have spent some time with Ginger Snowden of Coinjock Creek Farm & Market.

The people at Coinjock Creek are more than happy to take a bit of time out of their day to talk with you about working your garden plot or building your own produce farm. They are deeply devoted to educating others on getting their hands dirty and growing FOOD! From greenhouse construction to potato planting they'll help you out.

If you are new to the area - or are just struggling to get your dirt working for you I highly encourage you to head over to 194 Maple Road and have a conversation about how to get GROWing!! You don't even have to get your hands dirty once the market is open.

Enjoy the weather everyone!

ps It is GREAT to see the fields being worked - If you get slowed down by a tractor - say a little prayer for patience for yourself and safety for all those working the fields!

Currituck Central - JUMP START!

Wow - talk about a jump start. This page was published less than 3 hours ago and we've already had 10 submissions, over 100 views and phone calls about how people can help.

What does this mean? We, the locals, have a voice and we want to be heard. We want to support our local businesses - why? because its our friends and neighbors standing behind the counter working hard to make it.

Please keep the info coming in and be patient. If you see something missing - don't get mad or think we left it out intentionally - shoot us an email with info, contacts and a link to the page you think needs to be added. currituckcentral@gmail.com

We look forward to building a successful Currituck Central where we can come together as a community for fun and support!

Welcome

Welcome to Currituck Central - a free online source for events in our area. We cannot be everywhere all the time, but we'll do our best to feature local events, restaurants and festivals.

Have something you think should be added to Currituck Central? Send us an email with event details to currituckcentral@gmail.com and we'll add it to our page.

Know of a great local spot to get something good to eat? Point us in their direction and we'll grab a plate! Hosting a play group? Let us know how other families can contact you and join in the fun.

Check back often - we'll be updating every Friday so you can know what we're up to here in Currituck.
