SPRING IS HERE!

One of my favorite things to see is the bright hello of a daffodil in bloom. Its the one thing that tells me spring has truly arrived.

Did you know that we have a online garden exchange? The facebook group started by Wendy Roache' has flourished over the past year and grown to over 226 members. These members range from novice flower enthusiasts to master gardeners. Not only are they exchanging ideas and information, but you can actually find great deals on plants for your home/garden. If you haven't already check out the Moyock Garden Exchange on Facebook.

With spring blooms come the opening of our beloved farmers markets, gardening festivals and tourist season. On the horizon is a full schedule of wonderful events for our local community. I hope you'll continue to share what's on your agenda so we can help you get the word out. Feel free to submit information, photos and reviews to currituckcentral@gmail.com

Thanks - and HAPPY SPRING!

Community In Bloom

Wow, it has been a crazy year for our family, and unfortunately sometimes things like a blog have to take a back burner.

However, we're back and ready to once again share the FUN stuff to do here in Currituck. Please remember that we need help finding fun things to do. If you are hosting an event - large or small - please let us know. We'd be happy to share your information with out followers.

Since launching there has been an abundance of growth in the community as well as activities available. So much so that we had too much to do and not enough time to write. That's all about to change.

Check back soon for a new list of things to do here in beautiful Currituck, NC.

Memorial Day

There are two schools of thought for Memorial Day (Weekend).

A.       B.

I believe there is value in both - and there can be a blending of honoring our Fallen - and celebrating the gift of Freedom they've afforded to us all.

Some people will argue - "these wars aren't fought for us, they're fought for oil..." - Memorial Day is not uniquely linked to modern warfare. With only .45% of our population serving in the Armed Forces, it is also likely that individual families do not currently have a connection to today's military community. That being said regardless of your personal involvement with military personnel - we as Americans - all have a debt of gratitude to the men and women who've laid down their lives to provide us the luxury of the "American Dream".

Considering recognizing Sergeant Thomas Summerset, a Revolutionary War hero from our home state of North Carolina. Take time to learn about units such as the Burke Rifles, Edgecombe Guards, and Uwharrie Grays... NC units of the Civil War.

Offer a moment of silence at your Memorial Day Celebration - or read about one of the following Fallen - asking people to give thanks for the Freedoms we enjoy.

PFC Bryant H Womack, Korean War
CPT Patrick B Olson, Gulf War/Desert Storm
LCPL Noah Pier, Operation Enduring Freedom
HM3 Christopher Thompson, Operation Iraqi Freedom

I am not asking you to donate money, cancel your party or hang your head - instead rise up, lift your voice and REMEMBER those who've paid such a high cost. CELEBRATE their life. Find out what their favorite thing to do was and do it. Raise a glass in their memory and say a prayer for their family.

Memorial Day is a careful balance of American Pride - and Dutiful Reverence.  You can bridge the gap - if you take the time to do so. If you are looking for something to do - join in with our community and honor the fallen - while celebrating your freedom.

Have a beautiful Memorial Day... make it mean something.

Currituck YMCA - Healthy Kids Day

So many times we try to find something to do that is 1. FREE 2. FUN and 3. HEALTHY for the kids. The Currituck Family YMCA knocked it out of the park this weekend with their Healthy Kids Day event. Our kids learned about snacks, activities and living an active life style - our family even found a new dentist! On top of that, the kids got to run an obstacle course AND man a fire hose with the NC Forest Service!

We are Y members, and have attended other events in the past - this one was out of the box fun - and we're already looking forward to their next event (Memorial Day Weekend).

Thanks Y - Staff! We had a blast.

Spring Is HERE!

How do we know its finally Spring?
The traffic that makes us crazy....

Well there are two types of traffic here in Currituck
The first type that is loud, frustrating and racing through the county along 168/158.

Then there is an all together different type of traffic that everyone - even those who don't live here - should respect ((if not greatly appreciate)).

I know it is finally spring when I hear the fields surrounding my home come to life with preparation for the season and hard work. Maybe I'm a little nostalgic, but I don't mind getting stuck behind farm equipment - at least I'm sitting in traffic because someone's working hard instead of stuck behind everyone going on vacation.

Don't get me wrong - I am aware of and appreciate the fact that our county welcomes out of town visitors each year, which affords tourist industry funds and helps support our economy...

But at the end of the day; I would much rather sit behind a big red tractor than a never ending line of out of state plates. Be kind to those working the fields and be courteous when driving. We may not be "on their vacation" but we can still make the best of it.

Here's to a safe Spring and Summer Season ~~~

Moyock Fire Dept, Easter Breakfast

Moyock Fire Dept - Easter Breakfast:
By: Denise Hall

Grigsby, had fun checking out the fire truck!
A fun time was had by all at the Moyock Volunteer Fire Department's  breakfast with the Easter Bunny!  There was much to do for the kids, with a jump house, egg hunt, and pictures with the Easter Bunny. They also got to play with a fire hose and climb through the trucks!  The breakfast was great and it was an all hands on deck morning.  Moyock Volunteer Fire Department is a great asset to our community and we need to do all we can to support them!
